We're out of here!

The time has finally come and tonight we're out of FT Riley and en route to Afghanistan.  I'm happy that it's finally started and worried at the same time.  As usual the Army has told us little to nothing about how we're getting there.  The joke of the evening is that the airline maybe concerned about us carrying knives onto the charter aircraft.  Please explain to me how this is an issue, I'm getting on the plane with an M4 and a pistol and I'm on my way to fight Al Qeda but somebodies worried that I may leave a knife on the plane for some future high jacker.  What in the world??  Truly amazing!

It seems to be that the plan is to arrive in Kabul and spend about a week there and then move out to our FOBs (Forward Operating Bases)  Myself and an Master Sergeant, who I'll call MSG Famine, are headed to FOB Bermel located near the town of Bermel.  We'll be advisors to 2/2 Kandak Afghan National Army.  The base is fairly remote and located about 4000 meters from the Pakistani border.  Our team of 16 has been broken down into smaller 2 or 3 man units and assigned all over the 203rd Corps which is eastern Afghanistan on the border.  Not great for unit esprit de corps to train for two months together and then find out that we're being busted up.  The good news for me is that MSG Famine is very competent and squared away, so we're good to go.  We'll see what the rest of team is like when we get there.

That's all for now next post should be from Afghanistan!  See you on the high ground!
